Green Roofs - HPI Concrete
The Singapore Management University (SMU)
Design & construction of fully waterproof and durable concrete basement areas, as well as the extensive, heavily landscaped podium parkland levels overhead, presented a range of problems for traditional barrier waterproofing methods. These were largely solved or eliminated entirely by adopting the use of Cementaid "Everdure CALTILTE" and "3CC" Hydrophobic Pore-blocking Ingredients (HPI) for membrane-free waterproof concrete construction.
During the design stage, the Engineer's Soils Report had identified large boulders buried in the site. With much of the basement being only 1 level or less than 7 metres deep, this was not initially anticipated to be a problem. However proximity to the underground MRT station meant that diaphragm walling or equivalent would be required to ensure the MRT tunnels are not affected during construction.
Construction costs to place diaphragm walling through the boulders were considered too high, and it was decided to adopt Continuous Bored Pile (CBP) walling.
Stamford Rd, walkways & landscaping on the 3CC Concrete podium over basement areas.
However, while CBP walling is suitable for soil retention it was not viewed as a finished basement wall.
This required that the CBP wall be either masked by a waterproofed RC wall in front (where space permitted) or shotcreting directly against the CBP (where space is limited).
Cementaid worked with the project team to propose the optimum concrete waterproofing solution for the basement slab, walls & overhead parkland / landscaped ground podium & roadway levels.
Consultants agreed that to attempt to employ membrane waterproofing to the basement areas might present significant difficulties as well as costs, including the requirement for the applicator to firstly provide a flat surface onto the CBP wall areas before a membrane could be laid.
This would mean double-handling, in some cases triple-handling, of retaining wall surfaces and significantly increased construction time and cost. Moreover, the difficulty of preventing running water from the joints between the CBP means it is very difficult to ensure reliable bonding of the membrane. Similarly, the anticipated heavy landscaping, tree preservation / removal & replanting operations on the large podium deck areas would be likely to damage traditional membrane barriers, while their protection layers would add significant extra weight, time and cost to the structure.
To avoid the above difficulties and costs, it was decided to employ Cementaid Hydrophobic Pore-blocking Ingredients (HPI's) in the structural concrete, to eliminate the need for applied membrane barriers and their protection layers.
Cementaid 3CC System concrete was employed for the basement slab and RC walls in front of CBP walling. For space-restricted sections of CBP walling, CALTITE-modified shotcrete applied directly against the CBP was employed.
Cementaid 3CC System was also employed to waterproof the ground level parkland / landscaped podium and roadway suspended over the basement areas. The Architect further specified that a Cementaid WELDCRETE-Modified Cementitious Membrane be applied to the finished 3CC podium deck surfaces.
