The Singapore Management University (SMU)

Purpose-built over 4.5 hectares of prime Singapore land and completed in 2004, the Singapore Management University (SMU) campus is the first of its kind - designed, integrated and constructed in the heart of a fully developed cityscape, in Singapore's Bras Basah area.

The campus comprises six buildings - four schools, the Li Ka Shing Library and the Administration Building - and includes up to two basement levels with extensive car parking, as well as canteen areas, and overhead  roadways and landscaped parkland / ground podium levels.

The Project Team faced a range of challenges, including for the first time in Singapore construction of a major structure over two underground railway lines - the existing North-East Line as well as the new Circle Line, to be completed in 2010.  The project also required the construction of a road tunnel at Fort Canning as well as the realignment of Stamford Road, to pass across the landscaped campus parkland suspended over basement carparking and canteen areas.

A mammoth effort was undertaken to preserve the existing landscape and long-standing, mature trees as far as possible. An unprecedented tree-transplanting exercise involved the uprooting and re-planting of several mature trees growing in Bras Basah Park, while other trees were conserved in their original location. Notable in the conservation efforts was the transplanting of a 70-year old, full-canopy 21-metre rain tree with a crown 25 metres in diameter and weighing more than 37 tonnes.

Design & construction of fully waterproof and durable concrete basement areas, as well as the extensive, heavily landscaped podium parkland levels overhead, presented  a range of problems for traditional barrier waterproofing methods. These were largely solved or eliminated entirely by adopting the use of Cementaid "Everdure CALTILTE" and "3CC" Hydrophobic Pore-blocking Ingredients (HPI) for membrane-free waterproof concrete construction.
