THE PROJECT

Singapore Tanjong Pagar Cargo Terminal under PSA is a container with 8 berths and 29 quay cranes.  Its quay length is 2,300m and area is about 85 ha.  Since the operation starts in 1972, it continually serves as one of the busiest cargo terminals in the World.

As the cargo terminal was built in 70s, while the RC slabs, raking piles and beams of the terminal are always exposed to seawater, the wet and dry cycle, the aggressive chloride ions posed main threat to the structure and naturally it became the main concern of the Maintenance Department.  In 2000, PSA had decided to undergo a major structural repair to all the corroded and spall-off slabs, piles and beams under the terminal.  Cementaid was engaged to supply our Caltite® System to protect the damaged structure elements.

Design constraints

Like a lot of marine structures, the structural concrete of Tanjong Pagar Terminal is constantly attacked by seawater.  The daily dry and wet cycle brings the aggressive chloride ions in seawater directly into the concrete matrix purely through absorption and causes severe rebars corrosion and concrete spalling problems.  Before using Caltite® System, PSA used to employ sub-contractor to apply epoxy coating to the surface of the structures in a 5 years cycle.  However, the structure problem persists.
