THE PROJECT
No visit to Sentosa is complete without meeting its most famous, 37-metre tall resident, The Merlion.
The enduring icon of Singapore that's half-lion and half-fish is the official guardian and protector of the city of Singapore. The Merlion represents both strength, and Singapore's strong relationship with the sea. As this Merlion is so important to Singapore, thus it is also Cementaid's interest to keep this icon clean and presentable.
Design constraints
However, it was exactly the headache problem that Sentosa Leisure Group was facing all the while. Owing to the feature of this Merlion, its Mane at head and Scales on body are the most susceptible to daily dust and dirt. Worst of all, whenever after raining, rain water being absorbed into the icon and did not dry out fast enough, fungi and moss are using this icon as habitat.
In fact, Sentosa Leisure Group used to schedule a washing program to the Merlion every three years. The problem is that the clean-looked Merlion did not last long. Most of the time, the stubborn stain and dirt reoccurred in less than six months' time. On top of this, due to the design of this icon, it is almost impossible to wash the Merlion by using gondolas.
Solutions
Consolidating all the constraints, Cementaid in 2005 tailor made a cleaning proposal to Sentosa Leisure Group.
Cementaid proposed to spray Driwal, Cementaid silicone based impregnator, onto the Merlion surface. Despite that no gondola can be used, Cementaid hired "spidermen - professional mount climbers" to complete the task. In doing so, the whole Merlion becomes water repellent and rainwater shall not be absorbed into the icon that easily. Since rainwater is not being absorbed, now every raining is literally a good bathing time for the icon.
