The Problems
Tunnels are used in the transportation sector for conveyance of highway and railway traffic.  They also serve as a means of conveyance of water in irrigation and hydroelectric power projects.  During construction of tunnels variation of strata is often encountered.  This poses various problems in tunneling.  Also, the decision regarding the support system required for various strata is critical to ensure trouble free construction.  As the geological formation for each tunnel project is usually very different and all scientific studies are carried on a project specific basis, tunneling in a new formation remains an art than a science wherein the designers rely on intuition and previous experience to effectively solve problems.
Like all concrete structures, waterproofing system to this tunnel is crucial.  On the other hand, to ensure the waterproofing system being installed properly is also an important factor to determine the future effectiveness of the system.

In this project, the major problem is that it is a long tunnel that passes through a wide range of strata in different ground level.  Moreover, it requires a massive traffic diversion and therefore designers always have the desire to keep the construction time to be as short as possible.  In view of this, waterproofing system, being one of the critical paths in the construction program, places a very important role in the control of construction period as well.
However, Contractors know that an external waterproofing barrier system may not be a very good choice in many areas in this project because of many unavoidable constraints on site.  The temporary strutting on site is one of the typical problems.  With all the struts and king posts that passing through the wall, roof and slab of the tunnel, are basically meant for many recesses or box-outs on the wall, roof and slab that require reinstatement in future.  In such circumstances, it would be very tedious in controlling proper lapping details in each recess or box-out should external barrier is selected.  Obviously, integral admixture system has an advantage in this scenario.  While combining concreting and waterproofing program together, no construction time on waterproofing item is wasted.  Moreover, when all the structural members are constructed, all the outstanding recesses or box-outs required only a simply reinstatement through cementitious grouting is suffice.  It makes the construction sequence to be smoother and faster than all the conventional way of waterproofing choices.
